SUMMARY:Remembering the Ladies: Long Island Women during the Revolutionary Era – Natalie Naylor
DESCRIPTION:Women are almost invisible in most accounts of the American Revolution on Long Island\, although they experienced more than seven years of British occupation\, skirmishes\, and calculated humiliations. Before the war\, it was the women who made the boycotts against British goods effective by weaving homespun and devising substitutes for tea. The wife of William Floyd\, one of Long Island’s Signers of the Declaration of Independence\, like thousands of other Long Island women\, became a refugee in Connecticut after the Battle of Long Island in August 1776. The country home of another Signer\, Francis Lewis in Whitestone\, was wrecked and his wife became a prisoner of the British for months. Women who stayed on the island had their fields and orchards destroyed and their cattle and food confiscated.  Some had to house and feed British officers in their homes. Most coped with the occupation and survived the ordeal. \nThe speaker\, Natalie Naylor\, is a retired Hofstra University professor and the author of Women in Long Island’s Past and numerous articles on Long Island history. \nFree for BVHS Members\, $5 for non-members.

SUMMARY:New Date - The True Story of the Culper Spy Ring - Bill Bleyer
DESCRIPTION:Learn the true story of the Culper Spy Ring from former Newsday reporter Bill Bleyer\, author of George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide. History buffs have long been fascinated by the operation of the Long Island-based Culper Spy Ring during the American Revolution\, especially since the airing of the AMC series “Turn.” Over the years\, there have been many legends\, such as the role played by Anna Strong’s clothesline\, and suppositions about how the spies operated to support George Washington’s Continental Army.  The PowerPoint lecture separates facts from fiction and details the ingenious operation of the intelligence network that helped the Patriots win the war. \nFree for BVHS Members\, $5 for non-members.

SUMMARY:Babylon Village Arts Council - MoMA Grand Opening!
DESCRIPTION:Babylon Village to Launch Miniature Art Museums to Promote Local and Student Artists \nBabylon\, NY  – The Babylon Village Arts Council is set to launch the “Museum of Miniature Art” initiative\, a new community-driven project aimed at making art accessible to all. Inspired by the concept of a Free Little Library\, this movement will feature two miniature museums placed in public spaces throughout the village. \nThese mini museums will highlight professional artists\, student artists\, and community members\, with a focus on diversity and inclusivity. Art will be rotated bi-monthly and foster community connection by enabling spontaneous art experiences that spark conversation and unity. Featuring solar-powered lighting\, these art galleries will be visible at all times of day and will promote sustainable energy use. Reproduced artwork will be displayed to preserve original pieces.  The first location will be the Babylon Historical and Preservation Society. \nThe initiative will provide artistic enrichment and educational opportunities for Babylon residents\, families\, and visiting tourists. Programs such as artist talks and workshops will engage the community and coincide with artists on view. The Babylon School District will be invited to partner\, fostering a deeper connection between the art and the public. \n“This project is a great opportunity for local artists and students to showcase their work while contributing to the cultural landscape of Babylon Village\,” said Allyson Uttendorfer\, Babylon Village Arts Council Vice President. “We are excited to bring the community together through the universal language of art.” This work is supported by Long Island Grants for the Arts through funds provided by the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Huntington Arts Council. \nFor more information\, visit the Babylon Village Arts Council website or stop by the Babylon Village Library for a project rendering. \nContact: Babylon Village Arts Council\nEmail: rnorman@babylonvillagearts.org\nPhone: (631) 669-1810\nWebsite: www.babylonvillagearts.org

SUMMARY:The Drafting of a Radical Idea – The Declaration of Independence - Tara Rider
DESCRIPTION:When the “shot heard round the world” occurred in April of 1775\, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain\, and those who did were considered radical. However\, over the course of the next year as Britain attempted to crush the colonists’ rebellion and the arguments of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” were read by many\, the cry for independence would grow.  By the time the Declaration of Independence was signed in the summer of 1776\, the Continental Congress would declare that independence was “necessary.” Together\, we will explore how this 18th century document would become a significant landmark in the history of democracy\, exerting influence not only over the United States\, but globally.

SUMMARY:Right This Way: A History of the Audience - Robert Viagas
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot of books out there about stars\, about movies\, about directors\, writers\, designers and all the people whose work you see on the stage\, screen and playing field. What they all miss is the most important collaborator of all: the audience. \nWhen you sit down at a play or a movie or a concert—or even in front of the TV in your own home—you are taking part in one of the oldest and most mysterious forms of group human behavior. Right This Way: A History of the Audience is longtime Playbill editor Robert Viagas’ pop history of audiences through the ages\, packed with popular culture references. \nThe lecture sheds light on fascinating stories from the past and issues that shape our lives today—everything from the ancient Greeks\, the audience that saw Abraham Lincoln assassinated\, the history of booing\, the appeal of horror movies\, the group reaction at sports events\, right up to binge-watching Netflix. \nEveryone has been a part of an audience at one time or another. They probably never realized how important the audience experience is to human psychology and wellbeing. The COVID-19 pandemic took the live audience experience away from us for a time\, making it all the more precious. Right This Way: A History of the Audience explores what the audience experience brings us\, what it is good for and how it may evolve in the 2020s. \nThe audience experience meets a deep need in all people. Right This Way: A History of the Audience tells how and why.

SUMMARY:Clam Power – Steve Kuhn
DESCRIPTION:Steve has been clamming for forty years right here on the Great South Bay. It was while Steve was attending North Carolina State University as a design major when the idea for a Clam Power shirt was first created. \nEvery summer Steve would return home and clam to put himself through college. As a way to pay respect to the bay and to capture the turbulent times in the early sixties and seventies Steve came up with the Clam Power T-shirt. The T-shirt became a success among local clammers and eventually for many people on Long Island. \nhttps://www.clampower.org/

SUMMARY:From Factories to Palaces - Cynthia LaValle & Michael Janoska
DESCRIPTION:As Superintendent of School Buildings from 1891 to 1922\, architect Charles B. J. Snyder elevated the standards of school architecture. Unprecedented immigration and Progressive Era changes in educational philosophy led to his fresh approach to design and architecture\, which forever altered the look and feel of twentieth-century classrooms and school buildings. Students rich or poor\, immigrant or native New Yorker\, went from learning in factory-like schools to attending classes in schools with architectural designs and enhancements that to many made them seem like palaces. Spanning three decades\, From Factories to Palaces provides a thought-provoking narrative of Charles Snyder and shows how he integrated his personal experiences and innovative design skills with Progressive Era school reform to improve students’ educational experience in New York City and\, by extension\, across the nation.
