SUMMARY:The Drafting of a Radical Idea – The Declaration of Independence - Tara Rider
DESCRIPTION:When the “shot heard round the world” occurred in April of 1775\, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain\, and those who did were considered radical. However\, over the course of the next year as Britain attempted to crush the colonists’ rebellion and the arguments of Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” were read by many\, the cry for independence would grow.  By the time the Declaration of Independence was signed in the summer of 1776\, the Continental Congress would declare that independence was “necessary.” Together\, we will explore how this 18th century document would become a significant landmark in the history of democracy\, exerting influence not only over the United States\, but globally.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 31\, 2025 at 10 a.m.\, the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame will be dedicating an Historical Marker to honor the 140th Anniversary of Babylon Village’s own Cuban Giants at Argyle Park. \nImmediately after the dedication of the historical marker\, the Village of Babylon Historical Society will be hosting a reception at the Museum located at 117 West Main Street in Babylon Village. \nHot dogs and other baseball-themed refreshments will be served. \nWe will also be raffling off a few of our exclusive Cuban Giants t-shirts and hats. Each raffle purchased goes towards supporting the Historical Society and enables us to continue to provide programs and events for the public. \n

DESCRIPTION:Babylon Village to Launch Miniature Art Museums to Promote Local and Student Artists \nBabylon\, NY  – The Babylon Village Arts Council is set to launch the “Museum of Miniature Art” initiative\, a new community-driven project aimed at making art accessible to all. Inspired by the concept of a Free Little Library\, this movement will feature two miniature museums placed in public spaces throughout the village. \nThese mini museums will highlight professional artists\, student artists\, and community members\, with a focus on diversity and inclusivity. Art will be rotated bi-monthly and foster community connection by enabling spontaneous art experiences that spark conversation and unity. Featuring solar-powered lighting\, these art galleries will be visible at all times of day and will promote sustainable energy use. Reproduced artwork will be displayed to preserve original pieces.  The first location will be the Babylon Historical and Preservation Society. \nThe initiative will provide artistic enrichment and educational opportunities for Babylon residents\, families\, and visiting tourists. Programs such as artist talks and workshops will engage the community and coincide with artists on view. SUMMARY:Remembering the Ladies:  Long Island Women during the Revolutionary Era – Natalie Naylor
DESCRIPTION:Women are almost invisible in most accounts of the American Revolution on Long Island\, although they experienced more than seven years of British occupation\, skirmishes\, and calculated humiliations. Before the war\, it was the women who made the boycotts against British goods effective by weaving homespun and devising substitutes for tea. The wife of William Floyd\, one of Long Island’s Signers of the Declaration of Independence\, like thousands of other Long Island women\, became a refugee in Connecticut after the Battle of Long Island in August 1776. The country home of another Signer\, Francis Lewis in Whitestone\, was wrecked and his wife became a prisoner of the British for months. Women who stayed on the island had their fields and orchards destroyed and their cattle and food confiscated.  Some had to house and feed British officers in their homes. Most coped with the occupation and survived the ordeal. \nThe speaker\, Natalie Naylor\, is a retired Hofstra University professor and the author of Women in Long Island’s Past and numerous articles on Long Island history. \nFree for BVHS Members\, $5 for non-members.
