SUMMARY:From Factories to Palaces - Cynthia LaValle & Michael Janoska
DESCRIPTION:As Superintendent of School Buildings from 1891 to 1922\, architect Charles B. J. Snyder elevated the standards of school architecture. Unprecedented immigration and Progressive Era changes in educational philosophy led to his fresh approach to design and architecture\, which forever altered the look and feel of twentieth-century classrooms and school buildings. Students rich or poor\, immigrant or native New Yorker\, went from learning in factory-like schools to attending classes in schools with architectural designs and enhancements that to many made them seem like palaces. Spanning three decades\, From Factories to Palaces provides a thought-provoking narrative of Charles Snyder and shows how he integrated his personal experiences and innovative design skills with Progressive Era school reform to improve students’ educational experience in New York City and\, by extension\, across the nation.

SUMMARY:Daring and Intrepid Airwomen: Long Island’s Pioneer Women Aviators – Natalie Naylor

SUMMARY:Heckscher Museum of Art - Salt Life
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Arthur Dove and Helen Torr \nAn exhibition that presents approximately sixty works on paper by modern New York artists Arthur Dove (1880–1946) and Helen Torr (1886–1967). We will explore the couple’s connection to nature\, their experimentation with materials and techniques\, and their fascination with Long Island. In 1910 and 1911\, Dove created a number of inventive works of art that used stylized\, abstract forms at a remarkably early date in American art; he is considered the first American artist to have created such purely nonrepresentational imagery \nIn the 1920s and early 1930s\, Dove and Torr lived on a sailboat on the Long Island Sound. In 1938\, they purchased a 500-square-foot home in Centerport\, NY. Torr declared\, “We feel this is the loveliest situation we have ever had.” Dove agreed\, “I love this swashbuckling around the salt water. . . . Everyone seems quite delighted with this place. It is beautiful.” Now known as the Dove/Torr Cottage\, their home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a member of the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios (HAHS) program of the National Trust.
