Daring and Intrepid Airwomen: Long Island Pioneer Women Aviators. Sunday, April 28th, 2 p.m. – free and open to all. The first woman aviator flew on Long Island in 1910. Within months, other women were taking flying lessons on the Hempstead Plains and became among the first women licensed aviators. In the late 1920s, a 17-year-old woman from Freeport flew under all four East River bridges! And in 1928, another Long Island woman was responsible for propelling Amelia Earhart to fame. Learn about these and other Long Island’s pioneer women pilots. For more information about this event, click on the ALL EVENTS button above.
Clam Power! Steve Kuhn - Sunday, May 19th at 2 p.m. – free and open to all Steve has been clamming for forty years right here on the Great South Bay. It was while Steve was attending North Carolina State University as a design major when the idea for a Clam Power shirt was first created. Every summer Steve would return home and clam to put himself through college. As a way to pay respect to the bay and to capture the turbulent times in the early sixties and seventies Steve came up with the Clam Power T-shirt. The T-shirt became a success among local clammers and eventually for many people on Long Island. For more information about this event, click on the ALL EVENTS button above.
